Where ClientClose wins
You buy the module you need, not the platform. Canopy's modules are strong but they are priced and configured as a platform. If your list of requirements is "collect documents, chase clients, post receipts", that is one flat subscription here.
No client portal adoption problem. A link that opens on a phone with no login beats a portal your smaller clients will not log into.
Receipts reach the ledger. AI extraction and one-click posting to QuickBooks Online or Xero, rather than a well-organised folder someone still has to key in.
Live today. No implementation, no configuration project, no migration of client records before you see value.
Where Canopy might fit better
We'd rather be honest than oversell. Canopy earns its price at firms doing more than bookkeeping — particularly tax resolution work, where its tooling is a real differentiator — or firms that want document management, client records, time and billing consolidated under one vendor. If you are running several service lines with staff, that consolidation is worth the implementation.
ClientClose stays deliberately narrow: getting documents in from clients and getting receipts into the books. If that's your bottleneck, a broader tool is cost and complexity you don't need. If it isn't, Canopy may genuinely be the better buy.
